Location: It borders with the Tibet Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China in the North and India in the East, South and West respectively.

Time: Nepal Time is 5 hours 45 minutes ahead of GMT and 15 minutes ahead of Indian standard time.

Climate: Nepal has four major seasons, namely, (1) Winter: December-February, (2) Spring: March-May, (3) Summer: June-August, (4) Autumn: September- November.

Access to Nepal

By Air: The Nepal Air Corporation (NAC) is the national flag carrier of Nepal with flight connections to: Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata in India; Bangkok in Thailand; Osaka in Japan; Hong Kong, Shanghai in China; Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia; Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, and Singapore. Other international airlines flying to Kathmandu are Thai Airways, Indian Airlines, Pakistan Internationsl Airlines, Biman Bangladesh, Air China, Druk Air, Qatar Airways, Gulf Air, Jet Airways, Air Sahara, Martin Air, Austrian Airlines, Cosmic Air and Air Nepal.

By Land: Since it has India on three sides and China on the north, traveling to Nepal by land requires that one pass through either one of these nations. The entry points from India are Biratnagar, Kakkarbhitta, Birgunj, Belhiya, Bhairawa, Nepalgunj, Dhangadi and Mahendra Nagar. The Kodari Pass on the Nepal-China border is the entry point from China. Tourists entering the erstwhile kingdom by land must possess an international carnet.

Customs Formalities:
All baggage must be declared and cleared through customs on arrival and departure. Goods which are prohibited by the government cannot be brought into or taken out of Nepal.

Nepal Visa Information

Visa can easily be obtained from the Royal Nepalese Embassy or Consulate office located in your region. If you have left your home country and/or you don't have time to visit the Embassy, you can obtain visa from the Tribhuwan International Airport in Kathmandu or from any other entry point in Nepal. Make sure to bring a few sets of your passport size photos. Visa fees are inexpensive.

Visa Fees and Requirements

  • The fee for a Single Entry Tourist Visa to Nepal for 60 days is US $60 or equivalent foreign currency
  • Additional $50 grants Multiple Entry Visas
  • Tourist visa can be extended for a maximum of 150 days. Visa extension free for 30 days is US $ 30
  • To apply for visa, you will also need a valid passport, and two passport size photos
  • Business Visa fee is US$ 100 for one year with multiple re-entry and US$ 250 for five years with multiple re-entry.

Banks and ATM

ATM machines are open 24 hours, accepting international as well as local cards are available in Kathmandu and Pokhara. Banks can also offer American Express Traveler's cheques and currency exchange services. Most banks are open from 9a.m. to 5p.m.

Nepal Climate and Weather

The year is divided into 4 different seasons in Nepal - winter, spring, monsoon and autumn. The best period to visit the country for plant lovers is during spring when the flowers are in full bloom. The mountain slopes are covered with beautiful and colorful flowers. Spring season commences from early March and continues until late May. Even though the days are clear haze disturbs the mountain views. Late May, and the downpour begins. It continues till late August. Come September and the autumn season begins. It continues till late November. With temperate climate, clear blue skies and extraordinary mountain views it is the best season to visit the country. Winter begins in late November and continues till late February.
