Rolwaling Valley Trek.

Rolwaling valley is on east-west valley lying closed to the boarder with Tibet between the Tamba Koshi and the Khumbu himal area to the north-east of Kathmandu. Closed for many years to trekkers it has now been re-opened to those who also hold a climbing permit for Ramdung- Go (5930m/19450ft) one of the permitted trekking peaks in the area. Trek has to begins and end at SimiGaon as per the permit issued by the government. There are mainly trails to reach SimiGaon from Barabise in the west to Charikot on the road to Jiri. Inhabited mainly by Tamangs and Sherpas. This areas offers varied side trips east towards the Tashi Lapcha pass, and to the north high above the village of bedding. The trekking peak of Ramdung lies above the small village of Nagaon. This valleys offers a unique country for trekkers and climbers alike.

Outline Itinerary:

Day 1 : Arrive Kathmandu and transfer to Mustang Holiday Inn (or similar).

Day 2 : Half day sightseeing. Pre-trek briefing.

Day 3 : KATHMANDU - DOLAKHA

Drive to Dolakha to commence trek. Stay at or nearby to camp.

Day 4 : DOLAKHA – DOLTI KHOLA - SHIGATI

From Dolakha descend to the Tamba Koshi and follow the R. bank till you cross a suspension bridge over the Dolti Khola. Continue up the main valley through Malepu then up and down to Biguti 920m. Walk upstream till Shigati, where there is a check-post to camp.

Day 5 : SHIGATI – SURI DHOBAN – MANTALE (1070M)

Cross the bridge over the Shigati Khola, continue as the valley arrows with sheer cliffs on the R. side and cross a bridge. Cross another side stream and pass through Suri Dhoban, a village of about 10 houses. There is little space for agriculture as the valley is too narrow. You reach the terraced hillsides and fields of Mantale 1070m to camp.

Day 6 : MANTALE – SIMIGOAN (2000M)

Cross again to the R. bank and climb a stone lined path. Then up and down to reach Gongar. The valley next becomes V shaped with a waterfall to the east. Then you follow a path steeply up east to Simigoan 2000m. NB: The main trail continues north to Tibet.

Day 7 : SIMIGAON-GYALCHE

Climb steeply from the village through rhododendron forest to cross the ridge 2460 (possible camp). The scenery changes to semi arctic as you ascend the north side of the ridge to Sambur Danda La 3976m. Descend again towards the Rolwaling valley. A few huts mark Gyalche 1760m where you may camp. NB: Beware of possibly dangerous sections of the trail.

Day 8 : GYALCHE-YAK PASTURE

Walk down, cross the Rolwaling river and continue upstream through a narrow shady valley and through the settlements of Nyiaire and Ramding to Beding 3693m. There are several yersas (yak pastures) where you may prefer to camp.

Day 9 : YAK PASTURE-BEDING

At Beding, the largest village with a Gompa (monastery) & views of Menlungtse 7181m.

Day 10 : BEDING-NA

A short walk to Na 4183m. Slow due to altitude and very impressive scenery - Breathe taking.

Day 11 : NA-SEC.BC

Cross a wooden bridge above Na and continue along the valley with Chobutse 6685m. and Chugimago 6259m. in view. Turn South off the main trail near Kyiduk and climb steeply c4000m up to the ridge. Camp about 4900m.

Day 12 : SEC. BC- BASE CAMP

Descend along the ridge into the Ramdung valley and up to Base camp 5500m before the glacier.

Day 13 - 14 : PEAK CLIMBING

Climb the slopes of the Ramdung Glacier southwest of the subsidiary peak to gain the saddle at its junction with the Yalung Glacier 5650m. Climb Gradually, at first south to the foot of the summit block, then more steeply to the summit.5925m. Depending on snow conditions, the climb takes about 4 hrs. Descend by the same route to Base camp and back to the ridge camp.

Day 15 - 16 : Return via Na to Beding and Simigoan

Day 17 : Down to the Bhote Koshi and Bulung via Gongar.

Day 18 : Trek up to Chilangka Bigu Gompa

Day 19 : Short trek Bigu gompa

Day 20 : Rest day at Bigu Gompa and explore the sherpa village

Day 21 : Trek over the Tinsang La 3319m. and down to Dolangsa 2489m

Day 22 : Walk down to Barabise 820m. Drive to Kathmandu 3-4 hours.Over night hotel.

Day 23 : Free day in Kathmandu over night hotel

Day 24 : Early transfer to International airport for flight.
